She is the sister of [[wikipedia:Susanoo|Susanoo]] and [[Tsukuyomi]]. All three deities were born from [[wikipedia:Izanagi|Izanagi]] when he was purifying himself upon entering [[wikipedia:Yomi|Yomi]], the underworld, after failing to save [[Izanami]]. Etymology

Amaterasu is the Japanese goddess of the sun. Her name is derived from Amateru and means "shining in heaven". She is the sister of Susanoo and Tsukuyomi. All three deities were born from Izanagi when he was purifying himself upon entering Yomi, the underworld, after failing to save Izanami. Amaterasu was born when Izanagi washed out his left eye.
