Ayako is based on [[wikipedia:Fenrir|Fenrir]], a monstrous wolf from the Norse mythology. Fenrir is the father of the wolves [[wikipedia:Sköll|Sköll]] and [[wikipedia:Hati Hróðvitnisson|Hati Hróðvitnisson]], is a son of [[wikipedia:Loki|Loki]], and is foretold to kill the god [[wikipedia:Odin|Odin]] during the events of [[wikipedia:Ragnarök|Ragnarök]], but will in turn be killed by Odin's son [[wikipedia:Víðarr|Víðarr]]. He is also known as ''Hróðvitnir'' and ''Vánagandr''. Due to the gods' knowledge of prophecies foretelling great trouble from Fenrir and his rapid growth, the gods bound him, and as a result Fenrir bit off the right hand of the god [[Tyr]].
