Etymology
Serena is based on Artemis, the Hellenic goddess of the hunt, wilderness, forests and hills, childbirth, the moon, and archery. She is the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of Apollo. She is often depicted as a huntress carrying a bow and arrows. The deer and the cypress were sacred to her. In one version, Artemis once loved Orion, her hunting companion, but was tricked into killing him by Apollo, who was "protective" of his sister's maidenhood.
'Serena' is a feminine given name derived from the Latin word serēnus, meaning "clear, tranquil, serene". The alternate reading 'Selena' or 'Selene' is the name of the Greek Goddess of the moon.
