Etymology[]
Tsukuyomi is the moon god in Shinto and Japanese mythology. The name "Tsukuyomi" is a compound of the Old Japanese words tsuku (月, "moon, month", becoming modern Japanese tsuki) and yomi (読み, "reading, counting"). Like his siblings Amaterasu and Susanoo, he was born from Izanagi when he was purifying himself upon entering Yomi, the underworld, after failing to save Izanami. Tsukuyomi was born when Izanagi washed out his right eye.
